Why the Ministry of Social Development should be renamed the Ministry of Social Destruction

On paper, the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) exists to “support New Zealanders to be safe, strong and independent.”

· PIP'S BLIPS,ChatGPT

Lately, I’ve found myself asking whether words match reality. On paper, the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) exists to “support New Zealanders to be safe, strong and independent.” That sounds noble. But when you live through their decisions, you start to feel that the “development” part of their name is a cruel joke.

Official logo of the Ministry of Social Development, featuring the New Zealand coat of arms on the left and the words "MINISTRY OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT" in bold blue uppercase letters on the right. Below the English name is the Māori translation "TE MANATŪ WHAKAHIATO ORA.

For months, I’ve been caught in their labyrinth of delays, silence, miscommunication, and decisions that contradict not only common sense but also fairness. I’ve been told I was wrong, given incorrect information, and left without answers for half a year while my funding, my life, and my employees’ livelihoods hang in the balance. That isn’t development. That’s destruction. And it's not just me - others are feeling the pinch - or wrist burn - as well.

The irony is sharp: the very agency tasked with enabling wellbeing seems more skilled at eroding it. What does “development” mean if people are left financially unstable, unsupported, and vulnerable? If you’ve ever tried to navigate their systems, you’ll know the toll it takes — mentally, emotionally, physically.

I propose a more honest name: the Ministry of Social Destruction. At least then, the words would match the experience. I even drew a new logo, thanks to ChatGPT (below).

If we start calling things what they are, we might one day find the courage to demand something different that truly develops, supports, and protects the lives of not only disabled but all New Zealanders.
