Kia ora Minister Upston
I am writing to express my concern—and my hope—about the current state of the disability sector, particularly in light of recent funding cuts that have affected workforce and leadership development.
For nearly 40 years, I have worked in the disability space, 24 as Managing Director of Diversity New Zealand Ltd. This year, I have no active work for the first time — a direct result of the contraction in funding across the sector.
These cuts are not just impacting services and the expertise I offer, but sidelining decades of living experience, leadership, and innovation. I worry that we are losing ground on the progress we've fought hard to achieve. At the same time, I believe there's an opportunity to rethink how we value and invest in the capability and leadership of those with a deep commitment to this work.
I would welcome your thoughts on how we might move forward—not only to stop the erosion but also to rebuild a sector that supports dignity, contribution, and long-term sustainability.
